Get the Goals You Set

“Yoga everyday before bed.” Maybe that, or something like it, was your resolution for the year. You were so jazzed about it that you even went and bought a new pair of fancy yoga pants. Fast forward to NOW, and the only move you’ve mastered is the “Netflix and chill.” Sound familiar?

Here’s the deal…. Many of us (and my hand is raised, y’all) struggle with setting and achieving our goals. So I did some research on what really helps folks be successful in reaching their goals. I found that the biggest determining factors between those who failed or succeeded were putting words in writing and having accountability.

Step 1: Write it Down
Taking something that you want to do and committing to writing it down helps make it real. It is a tangible, visual reminder of what you are going to do. As nice as it is having everything accessible via a tiny device that fits into the palm of our hands, you still can not beat pen and paper for some things. And writing out your goals is one of those things. So throw it back to the good ol’ days and grab an actual pen and piece of paper. Make a list. Check it twice. And get to knocking it out. The phrase (or a version of the phrase) “it is written” appears over 100 times in the Bible. There is a reason that we write things down. Those words instantly become more powerful. Write. It. Down.

Step 2: Tell the World
Once you’ve written it down, figure out how you will keep yourself accountable. One easy way is to tell someone what you wrote down. Empower them to check in on you and see how it’s going. Tell them to ask you about it. And when they ask, be honest. Having someone else who knows your goal and who can help keep you on track is incredibly powerful. We are just not meant to struggle through life alone. “As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.” Proverbs 27:17 Let your friends help you–and be open and willing to help them back!
