Well, That Was Fun

By: Ayren Jackson-Cannady

The #blizzardof2016 rolled across the DMV like a boss, dumping 20+ inches of snow in my backyard. I stopped counting after the Spiderman bike disappeared. Anxious East Coasters prepared for the worst by salting sidewalks and stocking up at the supermarket (bread, milk, and more bread; actually all of the bread, please).

Now that the storm has cleared is clearing, we can look back and see that the whole thing really wasn’t so bad. Was it? In fact, Blizzard Jonas (per the weather-folks official name) turned out to be quite beautiful. So beautiful, that my four-year-old kept asking, “Is it Christmas again?” Nice try, dude.

But, think about it… there were glistening sled hills everywhere, snow angels and Olaf-attempts tagging front lawns, and neighbors helping neighbors dig each others cars out (no matter how many hours and ibuprofens it took). Instead of a point of inconvenience, the blizzard became a point of connection for many.

It’s all a great reminder of how God works in our lives. Sure, a situation may make you feel like you have the weight of the world piling up on your shoulders. But as you walk through it–with God–you encounter benchmarks where you can lay some of the heaviness down and you meet people who will take some of the load for you. In the end, all of that extra stuff has melted away. Just like the 20+ inches of snow will…eventually.
